One In A Million! Letters Against Isolation Celebrates Five Years of Delivering Smiles to Seniors Through Friendly, Handwritten Letters

[Boston, MA, April 27, 2025] Letters Against Isolation (LAI), a 100% volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit fighting senior loneliness, marked two milestones on April 6: five years of spreading kindness and joy — and the delivery of its one millionth letter!

Over the past five years, the organization has grown into a global community of volunteers committed to brightening the lives of older adults. Partnering with facilities in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia to create one-of-a-kind correspondence for seniors, LAI has helped countless individuals feel more engaged with their communities. Sisters Shreya and Saffron Patel, then high school students, founded the virtual program in 2020, and continue to inspire countless volunteers to “Fight Senior Loneliness…One Letter at a Time.”

Administrative volunteer Lindsay Gramana explains, “What makes a letter special is the writer’s empathy and willingness to share unique and personal stories. That’s what helps foster a genuine connection with each reader.” Rather than generic messages, volunteers are encouraged to share personal stories, as if they are writing to a grandparent or longtime friend.

Participants handwrite creative, conversational correspondence often decorated with colorful drawings, photographs or stickers. After each letter is complete, volunteers access LAI’s web portal to choose from a list of participating residential facilities and senior programs requesting messages in English or a variety of different languages. This flexible, virtual opportunity is available year-round, with LAI’s Leadership Team members offering support and guidance via email communication and social media.
