Dates of Distinction: May

Today on the blog, we are hearing from Ellen, one of our fantastic volunteer coordinators, is sharing the Dates of Distinction for the month of May!

We have lots of nature inspired fun dates in the month of May!

Thank you to Holly, Susan, Kathe, Linda, Margie, Cynthia, Susan, and Mary Jo for sharing your fabulous creations!

GREETINGS AMAZING VOLUNTEERS! Hope you are experiencing lots of April showers because what will follow are some fabulous May flowers!

Speaking of May... the birthstone is the Emerald, and the flower is the Lily of the Valley.

Some quirky, non-traditional May dates you may want to share with the seniors:

May 1: Mother Goose Day

May 3 : Kite Day

May 4: Bird Day

May 6: No Homework Day

May 10: Windmill Day

May 13: Tulip Day

May 16: Love a Tree Day

May 17: Walnut Day

May 18: International Museum Day

May 23: World Turtle Day

May 24: Asparagus Day

A note about holidays...

This is a good time to step back and review LAI's policy regarding holidays. As an organization which stresses inclusion as one of our main goals, we do not "endorse" any particular holiday and instead urge you to send cards and letters which are seasonally-themed and always uplifting. There have been lengthy discussions among our members, as well as our Leadership Team, about Mother's Day, for example. PLEASE consider that your correspondence may be going to individuals who have lost children, experienced miscarriages or never had children. Your cards could even end up in the hands of (gasp!) a male recipient. We strongly urge you to be considerate in the coming weeks and respect the fact that while everyone will appreciate a cheerful message with spring greetings, not every individual will be pleased to receive a card for Mother's Day (or in June, for Father's Day.) Thank you for understanding and for helping us continue to spread joy around the world as we enter our SECOND year!

An announcement...

One more thing...new Volunteer Coordinator PAMELA will be taking over the Dates of Distinction column so that ELLEN can focus on her other LAI responsibilities. We welcome your comments and suggestions at: lai.volunteer.rep@gmail.com.

As always...HAPPY WRITING!
