Dates of Distinction: January

Happy New Year!

Today on the blog, Ellen, one of our wonderful volunteer coordinators is sharing some very exciting and fun days in the month of January. I hope they will inspire a few of your letters and cards!

Announcing: a re-branded and simplified version of Fun Facts. Our new monthly column will be known as "Dates of Distinction" effective this January. These are a far cry from the standard "holidays" you'll see on a typical calendar! See if you can use this is information as topics for discussion in your letters or if you're inspired to create new and interesting artwork. Which will be your favorite "Date of Distinction?"

The flower of the month is the Carnation and the birthstone is the Garnet.

January is INTERNATIONAL CREATIVITY MONTH!!

Ellen W. created these beautiful cards and attached an origami ox because 2021 is the year of the ox!

Special dates in the month of January:

January 2 - Swiss Cheese Day

January 4 - Spaghetti Day

January 5 - Bird Day

January 8 - Bubble Bath Day

January 14 - Dress Up Your Pet Day

January 19 - Popcorn Day

January 20 - Penguin Awareness Day

January 21 - Hugging Day**

January 23 - Handwriting Day

January 27 - Chocolate Cake Day

January 29 - Puzzle Day

** Suggestion: send the senior a virtual hug or ask them who they want to hug most after the pandemic has ended. Yesterday, Shreya and I (Saffron) delivered some cards to the wonderful residents at Wingate Residences at Haverhill to wish them a Happy New Year. In each of my cards, I sent the senior a virtual hug and asked them who in the world they wanted to give a hug too. Hy, one of the seniors who has been spotlighted on our blog, told me that he wished to give a hug to his best friend. It was such a heartwarming conversation! Michelle, the activities director at Wingate Residences at Haverhill, told us that your letters and cards remind the seniors of special memories and special people in their lives! Your letters and cards are truly making an impact on Hy and each of the seniors we serve.

Wishing you all a safe and Happy New Year, and special wishes to those volunteers celebrating a birthday in January!

So many cute and creative ideas!! Some days when I have a little "Writer's Block", I turn to these posts for ideas to put some "spark" in my writing. It is so resourceful and always gives my creativity the boost it needs. Thank you for taking the time to put this together.

I would like to thank your team for all of the dedication and hard work you contribute to put this organization together!! It is so much fun for me to make my cards, write a little cheerful note and send them off to hopefully bring some warmth to someone's heart and a smile to their face! Thanks for making MY day!
